Thank you for visiting my campaign website for Delaware Insurance Commissioner. I am looking forward to the conversations I will have with the citizens of our great state.
Our community, state and nation are going through one of the most challenging economic times in recent history.
Now, more than ever, it's profoundly important to ensure that your hard-earned dollars be put to best use. It is the job of the Insurance Commissioner to keep insurance premiums as low as possible by recruiting the best insurance companies to do business in our state; making sure that companies, and agents, doing business in Delaware abide by our laws; scrutinizing rate filings; working with the Legislature and Governor to pass consumer-oriented insurance laws and being an advocate for the insurance consumer, not the insurance company.
The Insurance Commissioner is the only elected official whose job is to protect the insurance consumer. That job is not currently being performed. If elected, I will stand
up for the consumer as I have done all my professional life.
As your Insurance Commissioner I will continue the work of the Commissioner who first brought me to the Insurance Department - Matt Denn. I will restore the department's reputation as a department that enforces insurance laws and fights for affordable and quality insurance for the citizens of our state. Please take some time to explore my campaign site and do not hesitate to email any questions to me at judgemitch@aol.com or call me direct at (302) 265-4212.
Thank you and regards,

Today at the Old State House in Dover, consumer advocate Mitch Crane was joined by state legislators, local elected officials, and a crowd of supporters to kick off his campaign for Insurance Commissioner.
Among the legislators standing with Crane was Senator Karen Peterson (Stanton) who mentioned that she was one of Mitch's earliest supporters. "I told Mitch when he was still only thinking about running that he had my support. I gave him my endorsement before he even had the chance to ask me for it," said Peterson.
Representative John Kowalko of Newark added, "I supported Karen Weldin Stewart four years ago for Insurance Commissioner. However, she has not lived up to her promise to protect Delaware consumers. I've worked with and have gotten to know Mitch well enough to say for certain that he will deliver on his promise to put the consumer first."
Representative Darryl Scott of Dover talked about the importance of the race for Insurance Commissioner. "Insurance rates are going up at a time when most Delawareans can't afford it. We need an Insurance Commissioner who will fight for lower rates. We need an Insurance Commissioner who will recruit new companies into Delaware to compete for your business so that you get the best deal possible. We need Mitch Crane as our next Insurance Commissioner." Senator David Sokola (Newark) spoke of working closely with Mitch on constituent issues and sharing his "consumer-first" philosophy.
Also in attendance were State Representatives Ed Osienski (Newark) and Rebecca Walker (Townsend) as well as Kent County Levy Court Commissioner Jody Sweeney and Kent County Comptroller Georgette Williams and Recorder of Deeds Betty Lou McKenna.
In front of a crowd of 50 supporters, on the steps of the Old State House, Mitch Crane used the occasion to differentiate himself from his opponent. "I have a very different philosophy from the current Insurance Commissioner. Commissioner Stewart believes that the number one priority of the Insurance Commissioner is to protect the interests of Insurance Companies. I fundamentally disagree. I believe the number one priority of the Insurance Commissioner should be to protect you, the consumer."
Mitch Crane, a former sitting judge, worked at the Department of Insurance from 2007-2011 after being hired by former Insurance Commissioner Matt Denn. He will face off against the incumbent Insurance Commissioner Karen Weldin Stewart in the Democratic Primary on September 11th.
At the Campaign Kick-off in Dover yesterday, May 10th, Mitch Crane received the following endorsements:
The Eastern Sussex Democratic Committee unanimously endorsed Mitch Crane for Insurance Commissioner at its monthly meeting held, May 3. The vote came after discussion in which members of the Committee expressed their support for Mr. Crane by indicating he was committed to putting the consumer first, and had experience in the Commissioner's office.
"I think Mitch Crane is the best person for the job. He has the interest of Delaware's citizen's at heart. The fact that he has worked in the office under Matt Denn gives him an insight to the problems under the existing administration. His educational background and experience are key elements in my decision to support him for the position of Insurance Commissioner."
- - Vikki S. Bandy, Chair 19th RD, in announcing the representative district's vote in favor if the endorsement of Mitch Crane
